Not to advocate billing fraud, but do folks subconsciously bill extra for urgent work requested for unusual hours (midnight, weekend, big holidays etc.)

No, but I often find things take longer to do when I haven’t slept (because I’m not a machine who is equally productive at all points during the day).

For example, if I need to draft something at 3 AM there’s a decent chance it will take me longer to organize my thoughts than if I were to have done it the next morning

Subconsciously? 😂

Don’t you subconsciously commit fraud all the time

funny

You guys are playing dumb but I’ve literally seen people post that they do this many times in this bowl

likesmart

Nobody’s playing dumb. The issue isn’t whether people do it. Everyone knows some people do. The issue is whether it’s something that should be endorsed or normalized, and the obvious answer is no and we dont need yet another thread normalizing it.

Lmao what?

So like you bill overtime for your time entry? AKA fraudulent billing

like

“not to advocate for billing fraud, but do you guys recommend billing fraud?” fixed it for you 😂

People definitely do this but obviously people will not admit they do it within the profession

The great scandal of big law is how much of the hours are made up

Excuse you: when you scroll for four hours you have in fact worked 8 and not 12

I feel like if anything it’s the opposite. The extra review I would do at 2pm, I do not do late or weekend so I could do other things

If anything this kind of work gets done faster since I really want to get back to whatever else I was doing

Tips for bankruptcy associates who eventually want to move in-house? 3rd year associate in bankruptcy/restructuring group doing mainly bk lit but a few deals too. Need to stay in BL for at least another year for the money, but eventually want to move in-house. The path to in-house seems more straightforward for general commercial lit or more standard transactional practices. Any tips for someone who’s practice is a bit of a hybrid (and who will never likely do discovery or handle a depo)

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
