Some museums will do a group tour or some libraries and bookstores will do private story time for under $500. For example, the Morgan Library does/used to do both.
Another idea is asking your local pizza place if they’ll do a make your own pizza party earlier in the day. If your kid is a good eater and good with restaurants, do a smaller party dim sum lunch and order all kinds of things. Do a smaller hibachi dinner. Once my dad had a local sushi place “teach us” how to make sushi, but we were a little older than 6.
Other unconventional tours are fun too. Tour a local firehouse. The Intrepid does cheap group visits. Wave Hill often accommodates smaller tours through their adorable greenhouses.
I think we’re going with a make your own pizza party! Should be fun! Love all of these ideas❤️❤️

If a friend has access to a community room in their apartment, you could do DIY decorations and games and skip the hired entertainment. And say “no gifts” so the parents all love you.
