What was the hardest class year for you? I used to think first year was by far the hardest but now I’m a third year and I’m really feeling the pressure to step up. I work in finance and at this point I’m expected to handle closing documents, manage first years, draft some portions of major docs, etc. I feel like I’m always frazzled, constantly second guessing if I handled something correctly and anxious to answer calls from clients/OC. The worst part is I think people can tell I’m a mess....

Every year is the hardest... why do u think your salary keeps going up?

mo money, mo problems. People expect more and more of you each year. It never gets easier.

It never gets easier. You just learn how to not sweat the small stuff and you gain confidence from your mistakes.

Well, this is both funny and depressing.
Looking forward to it. ☕️

Gave notice yesterday. Teams are still shoveling more work on me. What’s the best way to communicate that I’ll wrap up the stuff I’m already on and work to transition my cases but I’m not wiling to pull all nighters for the duration of my notice period because they can’t be bothered to adequately staff up these cases? Ok to just say I’m not taking on any new work but will finish existing projects?

I need about 100 hours to hit bonus with NO work on the horizon. Fiscal year ends the end of next month. How do I frame this to staffing without sounding desperate? Is it in bad taste to specifically mention I’m only 100 hours away?

Got asked to help with a “2nd Level” doc review for a huge case. Seems like the firm was begging for about 50 associates. Staffing partner asked if I can help. My hours haven’t been all that great but I just started 6 months ago. First quarter is allegedly slow based on what I heard from partners. Idk if other associates in my group were asked. I said yes since I need to make my hours this year, but I wonder if this is a bad sign? Also, I’m not in litigation.

Sidley lawyers, how embarrassed are you right now? Sidley is being trashed and laughed at across the nation (and on ATL), I hope all good lawyers at sidley started accepting those recruiter calls that have dramatically picked up in the last 2 weeks (of course this doesn’t apply to the those near partnership).

Edit* so there seems to be a battle of misinformation on ATL with associates and partners/HR saying each other is lying about comp. For the firm to comment they must be very embarrassed.

It looks like I may clear conflicts about a week before I'm scheduled to take a vacation at my current firm. I was told by my current firm that I won't be able to get coverage for all my matters and will likely need to be available to work for a few hours a day during this vacation. How should I handle this? Is it inevitable that I'll have to work during my vacation right before I quit or is there a way to avoid it?

A client sent me a very nice email strongly implying they want to hire me for an in-house role. It’s a great company that I could eventually see myself at, but I’m trying to make partner in the next year or so. If I stay with my firm, how would you recommend responding to the client in a way that keeps this door open?

Anyone know anything about what it’s like to work plaintiff-side? Would it be dumb for someone with stellar credentials to leave biglaw for plaintiffs’ side work?

Nobody has really ever explained much about this side of private practice to me. From what I can tell based on my experience:
(1) their cases are usually really weak (maybe my biglaw defense-side bias)
(2) their lawyers tend not to be as highly credentialed
(3) would offer better experiences for junior litigators
