This can be rough. I personally do concentrate on them, but I try to do it off-line. So I plan my content, pacing, activities, etc, with my "typical" kids in mind. Now, who's this not going to work for? How can I differentiate?
Extra content for this kid, extra scaffolding for this one, more movement for this other one, maybe this one can pass out papers, or that one can run my slide show so that he's not chatting or otherwise disrupting. It's a battle plan 😀. And as with any battle plan, things will need tweaking in the moment. I try to have my deescalation strategies at my fingertips so that I don't get rattled, even if the kids do.
I have a "volume control" sign I can point to when needed; I change seats for kids on a whim; I roam the class while talking so I can stand next to someone who needs it. I send the kids on made-up errands as a deescalation. Like I put a note in an envelope with the secretary's name on it. the note says, "X needed a break. Can you just write me a note back, seal the envelope and send it back?" They do, the class has a chance to get back on track, and so does X (and me!). This is mainly for kids who are still learning control. If necessary, I do lunch detentions to reinforce my point. It's more convenient for me, and more painful for them. If I'm really trying to make a point. I play opera while they eat.
I needed the laugh I got when I read about playing the opera!😃 I like the idea of sending the student to the office with the sealed envelope.
