As a personal injury attorney… we don’t need the business this bad people. Don’t drink and drive. The dumbest thing you can do.
I don’t think it’s anything new in TX, and a lot of other places that are extremely car centric. I think especially people driving in from surrounding areas to party in Austin on the weekend, a 30+ min uber home past midnight is not cheap or may not be available at all. Public transportation not really an option that late either. Regardless, people should take personal accountability and make sure that they have a plan to safely get back home or stay the night somewhere when they partake, but in reality people make costly mistakes. Maybe it seems more common because the fall is busy in Austin, with UT games/ACL/F1/Halloween.
I am surprised, with our highway system, more people don't account for the cost of an Uber in their night out. Dead sober at noon on a Sunday the Mopac to 183 on ramp feels unnecessarily high and gives me anxiety.
I do recall DD was even worse for the few years Austin kicked Uber and other rideshare's out of the market.
There used to be a service that would come on electric scooters and drive your car home, I believe it was called sober monkey, but I don't know if they're still in business.
I have not noticed it but I also am not surprised. It doesn't matter where you go, there are always going to be drunk drivers. People always think they can get behind the wheel because they haven't had that many drinks when they should be calling an uber.
