Personally though I like saving money. I live about a 12 minute drive north of the Allandale area and have a relatively large renovated house for under $400k. You might want to look around as you can get high value for less money here.
Co-workers have suggested Allendale and South Lamar, FWIW. I was wondering if we should focus on south Austin since most of the other tech companies are up north, and we don’t need that given Google’s locations DT and East Austin (forthcoming).
Another preference: after my wife’s PhD (which has necessitated that we live close to a major college campus for the last few years), we’d probably like something a bit mellower. Maybe we’ll get that simply by virtue of moving to a smaller metro (idk the speed of UT’s campus under normal circumstances), but if not, I think we can exclude the drag.
I’m in Austin and definitely recommend the Allandale area, lots of fun stuff to do over there in close proximity.
Allandale is a great option if you both need to get downtown. The trick we’ve found with Austin is that crossing downtown (getting from North Austin to South) is a nightmare in rush hour.
South Lamar you’re likely priced out of, but there may be some stuff popping up. It’s also an amazing location.
There’s a ton of gentrification going on everywhere so there’s great options tucked in all around.
I don’t know where your moving from but a few things that struck me when we moved down are that there’s HEBs seemingly everywhere so walking distance to a grocery store isn’t as far fetched as it seems in some cities but ~10 minute drive is probably more typical. Unlike the dense cities of the northeast where ten miles out of downtown is an hour’s commute it’s usually only 10-20 minute here.
Thanks for the details - I’m very appreciative. Is there anywhere interesting under development that I should be looking outside of the marked area?
We didn’t look north because I (used to) commute to the airport and SO works south of the river but there were some good flips and new construction popping up in the circles I’ve got here. Might at least worth a peak.
