Pardon my ignorance/naivety: is there something that people who seem to have long, consistent careers as creatives are doing/have done that others aren’t?

I feel like there’s a ton of likable, hardworking people that can’t catch a break, especially right now. I’m perplexed because while our industry appears to be in free fall, I still see people whose careers are flourishing.
