If you can, live in Watertown. Short commute to Waltham, but you are much closer to Boston / Cambridge.
Screenshot taken at 7am with little traffic from waltham. Commute from Waltham to downtown usually takes 45 mins in commute hours either by train / car.

I lived on Pine St for several years 10+ years ago. I loved the Moody St area--restaurants, bars, shops, commuter rail, easy access to the bike path into Boston, arts, the river. Convenient yet low key. Can't speak to the apartments, I owned a condo/half a house.
$3-3.5k a month is actually on the lower side compared to some areas. Cedarwood is getting around $6k.
I lived at Edison on the Charles when it first opened, decent place to live. DM me if you want any more info on it
