I’m no account person, but I’ve never been promoted without hopping to a new agency. No matter how good my performance, there’s always some stupid excuse.
There is ALWAYS some stupid excuse.
Hop to another agency- simple
My clients expect an experienced AS to target Group Account Supervisor/Account Director roles for their next move. The AS needs to then speak to their ability to actually perform the role, including examples. I'm all pharma now but was the same when I worked with consumer agencies.
When you say “what feels like forever” how long actually have you been a sup?
Ah yea 4 years is a good amount. try to move within the agency. It all comes down to open available roles, it’s hard to get promoted in the same exact team since scopes are usually locked (with salary bands) so it may be a situation where your team doesn’t want to lose you but also can’t afford to promote you. But then you’re stuck, so make it clear you are willing to go within your agency or holding company for that title. Internal cross team promotions is much easier then outside like you said. Outside hiring a director, they will always want you to have been a director already because sups level of expertise is so all over the place depending on agencies. but keep pushing for it, you’ll get it one way or another. If someone is a stellar account person, it’s usually pretty easy to tell
Ask your manager what reservations they have, or where else you need to show that you're ready for the next step. Ask for a timeline. Do check ins. Raise your hand for more opportunities. Do things before someone needs to ask. Be vocal with what you want and let your manager and your managers manager know you are working towards the next step.
Same I’m the most experienced AS at my agency, my manager actually said I’m ready to be promoted and here we are.
My plan is just to review the job spec of an AD and taking some of those tasks on in the next months - hopping as a last resort!
What feedback have you been getting in terms of growth/improvement opportunities? It’s worth developing a promotion plan and reviewing it with your manager
Are you asking about feedback or opportunities? My manager is pretty absent for the most part. He kicks me the big ugly projects that I bust my ass on while he “oversees” them, and then he gives me positive feedback on everything I’ve done. Then I nudge him about a promotion and….???
