Accept that working in advertising sucks. Realize that getting laid off is probably exactly what you needed to change your life. Use the fee time to figure what you really want to do. End up back in advertising after a few months
I am working on studying for my GMAT and pursuing my MBA as a means to a better career.
I’m confident you’ll get to where you need to go. Take some time for yourself, reach out to people whose careers you admire, work out, learn a new skill, volunteer, build a side project, and most of all believe in yourself!
Your job doesn’t define you; you have so much value that extends way beyond the ad industry. I’m rooting for you, am excited for you, and again, am confident you’ll look back on this in a year and think about how much better off you are. ❤️
When you say don’t want to go back to agency side do you mean you’d like to stay in media? If so, follow the pitch trail — start by targeting shops that have recently won business or who you know are actively pitching.
But before you do all that, please go easy on yourself...nearly everyone has been laid off in this industry. Give yourself some time to be angry and don’t put pressure to immediately know what you want to do.
If your miserable lost feelings only showed up after being laid off, I'd like to remind you that's a completely normal emotional response to a bad situation. Your despair is temporary, you just need a few weeks to clear your head. Dont make any life changing decisions until your judgement becomes unclouded, just take it a day at a time for now. (Speaking from experience)
Have been there, and there sucks.
But the market is good and there’s so many client side opps, start-ups, etc. find your lane and get busy. Trust that this is actually a good thing.
Hi OMD! I’m also applying for MBA - what‘s the “better career” in your mind post-MBA?
Hey Senior Consultant!
I don’t have one dream career in mind per se—there are lots of awesome jobs that could leverage my strengths in technology (I worked as a developer before joining the ad world), research and strategy.
One dream path: product management and development, with an focus towards personal/consumer health. How can I use my career to create smart and innovative solutions that make it easier than ever to lead healthy lives? That could take many forms, a CPG/food product, an app, a wearable, etc.
I saw this call for entries the other day, was so inspired by it, and it reinvigorated my desire to just crush the GMAT because I feel an MBA would better equip me with the skills and connections needed to rise to this challenge:

Moonshot dreams aside, I feel confident in my choice because when I’ve taken my own advice and talked to people whose careers I respect—more often than not they have the MBA.
While it wouldn’t be the dream career I articulate above, I would also be grateful for the opportunity to go client-side in the marketing department at a health-forward company; something I don’t feel is open to me right now without an added credential.
(Apologies for the thread hijack, OP. 🙈)
Wow I’m so glad that you’ve thought of this through and taken your own advice. Applying to MBA myself, I know it’s quite some hard work and investment. I’ve worked with some clients in healthcare, and I can ensure you are right that most of them have MBA and they recruit from top business schools. Good luck with your application process OMD! (And thanks OP)
Sorry to hear OMD.
