Should I be concerned a landlord is asking for first month’s rent and deposit before signing a lease? We viewed a place, applied, and were selected. We saw the apartment with the landlord themselves and they also live on the property, so I don’t really think it’s a scam. Previously I’ve always paid the deposit/first month after signing a lease, but also am not used to a rental market like the Bay Area.

Is sticking up for yourself even worth it? My boss is always on my ass as if I’m constantly missing, or about to miss, deadlines. I’ve never missed one.
