Should I tell my boss I’m applying to higher paying and remote positions? I have a lot of respect for my boss, but the company pays lower than the market and I know I can make more elsewhere. Recently the company is requiring 3 days in office (possibly fully in office later). I have a 5 month old and I considered our previously remote schedule part of my comp. I know applying/interviewing doesn’t mean I have a new job, so I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot, but I also want to be respectful

Absolutely not. Tell them when you give your two weeks or if you have an offer in hand as negotiation leverage.

I know this is the smart way to go. It’s hard because it’s a small company, only two of us on the HR team, and my boss has gone to bat for me for raises, genuinely cares about my education, and gives me a lot of flexibility. I can’t help but feel like I owe him, not for hiring me, but for being a great boss.

You should not share this information with anyone at work, let alone your boss, unless and until you have accepted an offer and cleared all background checks.

Only if you want to be let go

Never. Tell them when you’re resigning.

Absolutely do not tell anyone at your current company until you have a signed offer for your new role.

like

No. Just No. Even the boss you highly respect can surprise you and disappoint you. Make your moves in silent. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row. Resign when you have the offer, background screening and confirmation of first day known and complete.

Are you new at this? No matter how much I adored my boss, I didn't put in notice until 2 days before my last day (they tend to cut off your access immediately when you resign in my industry). That was good enough.

Do not put them in an uncomfortable position. Look for something else then share. If they want you they'll try to save you. Just don't! I'm a manager and will always want the best for you

I've seen some people have success with telling their boss as they're looking, but it's the minority for sure. More often, a boss will take it personally that you are leaving even after they've gone to bat for you, and it will be unpleasant (to say the least) or lead to you being let go sooner than you have a plan in place (at the worst). Only you truly know what you should do, but one thing to keep in mind, if there was downsizing coming to the company, do you think your boss would give you a head's up? Or do you think he/she wouldn't say anything until you were being let go. That may help you make the decision. Good luck!

No wait til your new offer is signed and background check is cleared at the very least.
