Absolutely! Use the notebook you brought that has your questions in it.
It's something I do but I understand that it's not for everybody. I mostly do it because I have a really bad memory and I get nervous, so I want to make sure I don't forget to circle back to anything. I certainly don't think it's a requirement, though. And if it doesn't work for you, don't do it.
I have taken notes as a candidate for every interview I attended in person. I think it is odd when people don't bring a pen or paper to an interview.

That doesn't sound like good advice. I would say it's good to be making mental notes during an interview, as there may be things mentioned you'd want to go back to. Sitting and taking notes in an interview seems like it would be pretty awkward.

Its not awkward at all! You're not transcribing the conversation. Just making note of key points.
