Joined BCG at 40, did two years and transferred to a FANG strategic transformation function for about 3 years to recover. Now I'm 44/45 and jumped back into the fire at a Big4 bank as a VP Transformation. I'm so tired man, probably retiring in 5 years or going back to FAANG
I can definitely relate - similar path although I was about 5 years younger than you.
Experience after leaving really depends on what you’re going to. My new job is slightly less hours, slightly less travel, and slightly less intense than consulting, but more money.
Things I noticed right away were more control of my schedule and usually longer timelines to complete things (but also weaker teams).
There were other jobs I looked at that would have been better quality of life but less money.
Started at 40, made it 4 years, did ops for 2 years and was bored out of my mind, so now at a Tier 2 and so far feels way more sustainable. We’ll see how it goes.
Similar to you.. joined at 34, stayed until AP, bounced when we had 3rd kid on the way. It’s a boot camp - you do it as long as you can take it and then you’ll be happy when you leave. I remember the stress of putting the kids to bed knowing I had an 8PM PS and hours of work ahead of me. So happy those days are over.
Same story different timelines. Joined mid 30s, been here for 5+ years and now looking to leave as I am drained beyond all imagination
Same… joined McK at 35 with3 little kids and left as an EM at 40. Been in tech for the 5 years. Doing well and moving up but still haven’t quite recovered in that I rarely have it in me to do a full 40hrs…
Started in consulting at 37, 10 years later I’m laid off -as associate partner and options outside of consulting is hard to land and not sure I can return to the consulting hours!
Why are options outside of consulting hard to land? I would think companies want ex- consultants, might have to go for non-strategy roles.
