So I need clarification. I work in the clerical part of the medical field (front desk). I schedule appts, update basic information and verify insurance. The current office im in I feel has me doing things well past my actual job. Refilling meds, telling patients results of labs or other tests. They expect me to know when a patient asks for a refill when they were last seen and if they need scheduled. I feel this is way out of my job expertise and expressed im uncomfortable. Am I wrong?

If you are in no way clinically licensed to read and understand a test result, no, legally you should not be discussing any test results ever. That’s a huge liability to the practice and they’re actually brain dead if they’re letting you despite you saying you aren’t comfortable. Bring in legality to the issue and they won’t make you continue doing that, if they care at all about their practice and keeping it compliant with all regulations and laws involving medicine and healthcare.

Never, never do things in the medical field that you are not qualified to do. Test results are not even given out by nurses unless the physician ask them to do it. That’s the physician’s job and part of why he makes the big bucks. I cannot imagine anyone except the doctor discussing patient’s test results!

Giving out medical information as a receptionist is out of your realm. Check your job description, and explain you are not comfortable answering medical questions. You know if they ask one there will be more. We have strict guidelines as a CMS provider and what duties belong to MA, Nursing and Physician and receptionist.

No that's not in your job description. If the patient needs test results that they cant get online through my chart, then refer them to their doctor or a nurse. If a patient needs refills, they need to talk to their pharmacist or their doctor to put in the request. And if the pharmacy needs any information, do the same. Im not sure what is against HIPPA on what you can tell the pharmacy about the patient, and if I were you, I would be VERY cautious about what I tell them, and tell them that. If you don't know what information you can or should give them, tell them you're not comfortable in giving out that information to them about the patient and that you'd be happy to get them in touch with a doctor or nurse to discuss said request. Its not worth your job.

that is too much:)! the patients know when they needed refill then they can call their HCP for prescription/s if it is not OTC and even OTC they still have to contact provider for consult for contraindication with the ordered meds!

I agree that they're asking extra. but being a team player helps out the office. and maybe think of it as experience needed.

I don't feel you are wrong to express concern. Especially if these tasks are not part of your job description and/or not discussed upon interview. Do you feel you need more training to perform this task accurately? If so, request it and keep everything documented. Many people are not familiar with medications and are not comfortable with working with their names, dosage, etc. I hope you are being compensated accordingly.

You're not wrong, they should pay you more if they want to add additional duties to your scope of practice. In reality, that may not happen. If you complain, it may put a target on you to get terminated sooner or later, they can always find someone else to do the job.

Not at all, and all because they don't want to hire more people. That seems to be the normal expectation these days. Do more, same salary, within 8 hours & have a good day.

If you aren't trained to do it and have no medical background it doesn't sound like they are running their office the right way. Report a HIPAA violation by filing a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR). You should generally file your complaint within 180 days of when you first became aware of the violation, and you have the option to submit it either with your name or anonymously.

I’m a certified Health Coach (my training/courses are CCE-accredited by the International Coach Federation) w/ a BS in Psychology. I got a temp to hire starting at $18/hr. It is my first professional health coach job & they did not require temps to have a coaching certification, but I have one. I’d like to know if temps could negotiate salary when given the job offer. The position is remote & I’d like $20/hr. I’ve invested in myself as a coach & plan to complete board certification by early 2023

It’s a total shift that would really heal my work-life balance, job satisfaction and budget. My only fear is that I would not be using the license and degree that I worked so hard for. So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.
