So job hopping is the new taboo, but salary raises won't become the new norm. New hires make much more than long-term employees, but old employees can't ask to be matched to what the new ones are being offered. Where is the solution? How do you fight all of these interconnected conflicts and do better for yourself? I can't believe that I'm still only making 25% more than I was making 7 years ago. It truly is such a pain.

The simple rule of thumb is that a continuous raise should be around 5%, and a promotion should be around 10‐15%. If you want above that, it's going to require changing employers. I usually go through a 4 year cycle. 5%/year for 3 years, year 45%, but I start looking external aiming for 20-30% over current including the Y4 5%.

Job hopping has always been taboo.. We just got to abuse it during covid. It's just all about proper balance. Don't go hopping every 6-12 months. It takes at least 12 months to fully acclimate to a new work environment, meaning the minimum you have to stay to be viable to a company is 24-36 months. Jumping and climbing every 36-48 months is safe.

A promotion isn't job hopping. It's when you continuously keep changing companies.

In a country full of consistent layoffs, bad managers and toxic work environments - can we please stop blaming "job hoppers." People get sick, their family members get sick, they get a career-changing opportunity, companies decide they are going to lay off departments. Let's change the conversation, please, it's so tired.

Stay where you are, and have multiple conversations backed with good industry-standard research about what you should be making and let them know they have to see you eye to eye if they want you to stay

Don’t do this without an offer in hand cause they may just call your bluff

Job hopping isn't taboo if it is aligned with progression. Nobody will fault a person who jumped to take on a new challenge or grow.

The person who jumps every year or two into lateral roles will have a red flag. It takes 6-12 months to integrate a person into an org and make them valuable. I don't want a person who jumps the moment that real responsibility starts to fall at their feet.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

When do you know you've toured enough houses and should pick one from the list you've got? I've seen probably 15-20 homes, and put in one offer. How many homes should you tour minimum, and how many offers did you put in before you closed? I don't want to be too hasty and choose something just because, but I also think continuing to see homes isn't really making my decision any easier. Thanks!
