Quick temperature check: litigators, are you all underwater this month? This has been my busiest end of year season in actual years. I am getting slammed with expedited court deadlines from judges every, single, day. Clerks, what’s going on?! Send help.

Wow I thought it was just me. Things are literally on fire right now.

like

Dumpster fire status here too!

Can confirm... December through March experiencing an uncivilized level of activity.

like

Uncivilized is the perfect word for it, truly. Good luck and onward! Hope you can find some solace in knowing you are not alone 😫

Litigation associate, insurance/personal injury on the defense side, 2.5 years in (admitted Nov. 2019). Not only is basically everything due “RIGHT NOW OR IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS (caps for emphasis),” but everyone - partners at my firm, attorneys at other firms, judges, clerks - are giving me attitude. I don’t get what it is. Hang in there, guys. Oy vey.

like

Best of luck to you!!! Same thing on this end. I just finished a teleconference where the court moved up deadlines and refused to grant joint requests for extensions. LOL @ me having 2 motions due on NYE. 😑

like

Not a litigator but can confirm from an M&A standpoint. It appears everyone wants to close before Dec 31.

like

CRE (which is always notoriously bad) is atrocious this year too. And the level of unprofessionalism from clients and OC is truly unmatched for some reason.

Yes

Completely opposite for me. This is my slow time. Hardly any court activity. Opposing parties/counsels seem to be a bit more relaxed, too.

This was always the case for me in past years. I normally take all my PTO this month. This year has been totally different though. I’m about to use my PTO for a weekend off… I am extremely jealous of your plate rn—enjoy the time for all of us!

Back just to say I stand corrected. It was not just year-end chaos but has now expanded to the entire winter season. I hate it here. Good luck to you all and hope some of you are keeping your head above water *turns back to drowning*

So I just came out at my small firm in a small southern town. Historically, I haven’t discussed my personal life at work— but I had to give notice anyway. I told the partners I’m moving to be with my boyfriend. It was a surprisingly lovely conversation given that I’m at a firm of rich old men, deep in the heart of Tr*mp country.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

For those managers and senior managers who are directly working with new staff and interns - how are you maintaining the quality? I am at a breaking point now as I have no seniors on 3 of my clients. How am I supposed to concentrate on complex allocations if I have to do all the updates on basic M-1s. All the experienced S2 and S3s I trained got pulled into other engagements as acting managers. I am about to smash my laptop into pieces 😫

Any tips on leaving a firm “correctly”? Was about to go “of counsel” with my firm of 6 years, but then another firm whose partners I really respect (and personally like) offered me a partnership position. Motions
I work in a midsize firm and we have the basic subscription to westlaw, which doesn’t include the ability to see filed briefs, motions, etc without incurring additional costs. I’m wondering if there is a service in the NJ/PA area that gives you access to previously filed motions and briefs? So if I’m drafting a summary judgment I could search the service and find a similar one. If this doesn’t exist.. I think I found the next million dollar idea lol
