You mean the state government that now has a republican supermajority? Doubt anything progressive will be making its way through
I believe the minimum based on the price of living needs to be at least $18-20 per hr especially in the city of Charlotte.
You really think someone who dropped out of high school working at McDonald’s should make 18-20 an hour?
Exactly. These jobs are designed for high school/ college students. If you start paying people that work these jobs 18/20 per hour inflation will only get worse than it already is. There are plenty of other jobs that someone can go into that don’t require a college degree where people can make a living wage.
Not enough but it's a start (assuming it actually passes a Republican supermajority - as someone else pointed out).
I worry that this will incentivize businesses and landlords just to raise the price of everything so it "balances out", which really does not fix the problem!
Exactly. Landlords set a price based on the type of people they want to rent. Suddenly 18-yo fast food workers can afford a $1500 apt? They want to attract young professional couples so -boom- rent just doubled. And, since rental prices are based on the market, everyone else raises prices.
A higher minimum wage is a good start, but it's not enough on its own. We need to invest in education, healthcare, and other social programs that support working families.
a living wage for a single person is now like 17-18 in Charlotte. V V weird people on here who think folks dont deserve a living wage. Furthermore. not paying a living wage is wage theft - and just goes to the capital class (owners of production) not you worker bees - so someone making 17+ doesn’t concern you. focus on yourself
To be honest, I don't think it's enough for anywhere in the United States to be honest. We have been fighting for $15/hr so much that it's not even enough anymore
A $15/hour minimum wage would represent a significant increase, more than doubling the current minimum wage, and would have a significant impact on low-wage workers and their families. However, whether it is sufficient for a specific state will be determined by the cost of living in that state as well as other local factors.
Bruh, $15/hr is not cutting it in this day and age. Everything is so expensive nowadays, and $15/hr is still not even enough to make rent in some places.
$15/hr might not be much in some places, but in NC that's a game changer. That's enough to make a real difference in people's lives.
Ehh this is so tricky because I know so business owners are landlords are not going to take a cut to profits to make employees more so they're going to raise their prices which is going to put us in the same predicament
I don't get why people are hyping up $15/hr like it's some kind of miracle solution. We need to address the root causes of poverty and inequality, not just slap a bandaid solution on it.
one of the causes is not having enough money. 2nd cause is greed.
If you share your expenses with 3 other people, all making at least that same amount… maybe.
