So when faced with a choice between a higher salary and a great boss, I’ve learned to ask a different question: Who will I become if I work here for the next few years? Given the choice, what would you pick?

I'm taking the higher salary. That's the only thing in this scenario that's actually guaranteed. A great boss sounds nice but people leave, get promoted, or get pushed out all the time. You could take the lower paying job for the boss and then six months later, they're gone and you're stuck making less money for no reason. I'll take the sure thing.

like

Hell yeah, that's a rock-solid mindset in taking the higher salary as the guaranteed win. You're spot on about bosses; they're the wild card. People move on all the time (promotions, new gigs, layoffs, whatever), and poof, that "amazing manager" vibe is gone, but your lower base sticks around forever.

It really depends on what kind of salary difference you were talking about. Something like 10%, I'm taking the good boss. It's incredible the difference to overall happiness that a good boss can make. If it is a really significant salary difference though, it would be a much harder decision.

like

Totally fair point! it's all about the scale of that salary gap. A 10% difference? Yeah, I'd probably lean toward the great boss too. Daily happiness at work is huge; a good manager who has your back, gives you autonomy, and actually develops you can make even tough days bearable. I've heard from friends who swear that switching to a supportive boss added years to their career longevity because they weren't constantly stressed or second-guessing everything.

Always the great boss. People don't quit jobs, they quit managers.

As someone who is virtually our only compliance person at a mid-size company, I often get questions for legal advice. I am not an attorney and cannot give legal advice (my disclaimer), but I do look at the situation from a compliance/policy/process lens and urge to consult legal always. I feel as though it discredits me and my advice because I’m not an attorney. How can I better differentiate compliance from legal and still provide valuable advice?

We are renovating a condo and the previous owner had two Crane toilets (not sure how old, but functioning although seals are old according to our contractor). Back outlet flour mount ones are the only options for the building, and one toilet can cost $300-$500.

We are redoing all the bathroom tiles and walls and debating what we should do with the two toilets. Would resealing the toilets extend the use life? Or should we just replace the toilets? Any other recommendations? TIA!!

Researching the job mkt & pay for nursing: It is so easy to set up a first interview esp. as a nurse. Set up a zoom meeting, in the zoom meeting ask abt job details and ask for the salary range. They will give it to you, and in my case it was the same range for both of the companies. (Hospice oncall nurse here👋). Then you fit in somewhere on that continuum based on education & experience—that where the negotiation comes in—they will make a case to place you as low as possible on the scale.
