As someone who is virtually our only compliance person at a mid-size company, I often get questions for legal advice. I am not an attorney and cannot give legal advice (my disclaimer), but I do look at the situation from a compliance/policy/process lens and urge to consult legal always. I feel as though it discredits me and my advice because I’m not an attorney. How can I better differentiate compliance from legal and still provide valuable advice?

I work in a regulated industry, although I'm not the compliance professional, and I get this a lot. A lot of the time I say: I'm not a lawyer, and you should probably consult one, but here are the underlying principles that govern what you're talking about. Then I take the chance to educate folks on FDA's approach to risk and benefit, or the principles behind making sure you don't give up sensitive info even with an NDA, or whatever, in a way that speaks to their question and gives them a shot at getting further without me or eventually using the lawyer more effectively.

I explain to people I cannot give operational guidance. I can tell them how our policies apply and provide insight on the decisions regularities have made in our industry. If they want legal guidance, they need corporate counsel involved, who can explain legal ramifications of their business decisions.

I’m a cradle Catholic and my faith has been a big part of my identity. I’ve been a liturgical minister, altar server, lector.. I’ve regularly gone for Catholic retreats, adult Catholic education etc. - all this to say I’ve been pretty serious and invested in my faith
However I’m having a crisis of faith right now. I’m appalled and embarrassed by the way in which the Catholic Church in America (where I now live) is IMO unashamedly political (cont.)

Just signed the outside employment form in KPMG onboarding system. I actually wanted to start dabbling in creative writing as a potentially monetizable hobby, but I'm guessing this may pose issues.

Definitely interested in the "exception from this policy may be requested if provision of non-professional services doesn't interfere with one's duties of causes conflict of interest" clause, though. Has anyone been able to get one of those before?

Additional Posts in Ethics In Business

Hey guys, newbie here please be gentle with me 😅. I have recently accepted an offer but my gut tells me it might not be the best for my future move. As usual there a probation of three months during which the notice period is half the time as compared to if I was a comfirmed staff. Do you think I should start looking and make use of the shorter notice period during my probation?

Is it possible to have a career that you think is ethical, even if you work for companies that are not ethical (such as Facebook or an oil company, for example)?

I’ve long disliked the term ethics. Definitions of ethics all refer to morals. Morals are very personal and vary a lot from person to person, culture to culture. Law is how we as a society express our preferences and impose rules and restrictions on ourselves. So the question should never be about whether companies can be ethical. What does that mean? One person thinks eating meat is unethical, another thinks it’s perfectly ethical. Companies should focus on complying with the law.

Absolutely. Businesses can be ethical by treating people the way they’d want to be treated. 3 ways Airbnb can do this: Aggressively fight fraudulent listers, let Airbnb members control their data (allow data requests/permissioning/deletion from any state or country), and oh - make it easy for people to get their money back if their travel was affected by covid-19. How not to be ethical: marketing ethics vs living them.

I could use some advice on this situation. I’ve been working for a small family owned business in Toronto Canada for about 4months. I’ve noticed a lot of unprofessional behaviour since I’ve started (yelling at workers infront of customers) I’ve bounced around different positions so much that the owner blames 98% of stuff on me when something isn’t done, even if it’s not my responsibility anymore.A week ago I asked for an employment contract to get this straight but nothing yet. What do I do?
