Always step. Motion is usually slow and either goes when you don’t want it to or is too diffcult to activate
Motion we bought from Costco 5 years back works just fine.
Step, simplehuman from Amazon or Bed Bath and Beyond
Simplehuman Step
Step can I’m stuck can you help me. Oh no step can what are you doing?
Edit: Sorry I got carried away haha
Had motion sensing simple human can, returned it for step can. Go ahead and get the motion can, It will close on you at the most in opportune time and you will understand why I did what I did.

Simplehuman step. Inserting the bags is really annoying on the motion units.
Genuine question: is motion sensor really needed for a trash can? As a foreigner, the degree to which this country tries to minimize any sort of effort here is baffling.

Having said that, step
Step; nothing dumber than forgetting to charge your garbage
Step. I have a motion and it drives me crazy. Opens every time you get somewhat near it. Legitimately startles guests who walk past it.
Step. Motion is too easy for my dogs to open and remove the trash
Simple human motion and use Costco bags. It does tend to open randomly and can be creepy late at night...like why does it open when we are in a different room.
But we never had the problem with it not opening on command. I find it easier to use than the step can.
Bags have not been an issue- even with wrong size Costco bags.
