Does this happen in social studies or home room? It should be shut down in math. Bring it up in team or faculty mtg. for building or administrative policy or guidance. Ask what sources the kids are using, often they’re unreliable. Facts, not opinions, are the only thing welcome in school. Have those loudmouths write a persuasive essay. I’m sorry, they sound rude and prejudiced and out of control. The suggestion box is a good idea.
I agree with you. It needs to be shut down. Prejudice does not belong. A comment box may be warrented.

Sounds like your students are trying to make sense of all of this, despite their comments etc.
This is just a suggestion. What about having a question/comment box related to the war, name it something catchy. If students have questions or comments they put it in writing and stick it in the box. You’ll have a chance to review the questions/comments before the next day. What comes next is where I’m stuck. This will be a highly emotional conversation (for at least some).
I had students ask me about my view. I told them I don’t know enough about what’s going on to form an educated opinion.
I’m with the young ones so I don’t think they know a whole lot about it-could you have a writing assignment like a diary/journal type report? Someone where they can vent their feelings and not feel it’s “wrong” or “right” and maybe grade it based on things like page length, grammar, spelling, etc? Maybe that will help them feel heard and be a safe outlet
Its only natural for kids to be curious about each other and their backgrounds, as long it is not for bad intent or nefarious purposes. It should not happen in all your classes just the ones that discuss world event. A good suggestion might be an ice breaker MM sessions, when things get out of hand, this way their differences will be celebrated and not targeted.
I wonder why there is difficulty in understanding context when we teach our students that Western democracies are rooted in oppression.
