I put the grades in so they can see the damage. I "force" then to check their grades at the beginning of class on Mondays. I invite them to fix the bad grades. When I taught HS I did less of that, but some of the 7th graders need to see the cause and effect.
I also call late points an inconvenience charge (which I can waive if there is cause). But something is always worth more than nothing. Works for most.
For some of them I do care more than they do. So I have to build bridges. If I can get them to do it for me, over time they may start doing it for themselves. But if there is nobody else to do it for, it starts with us.

I did have an experience with one of my 6th Graders the other day. He did not want to finish his Beginners module in Typing.com, so I issued him a challenge to see if he could best me in typing the drills. He got into it and actually beat me on a round. Needless to say he got pretty excited and wiped out several lessons in a few minutes.
I also put missing assignments in as a zero. I am very gracious in accepting late work. The zeros, even for assignments missing due to absence, are big motivators. When students come to me and ask how they can get their grade up, I can point to those missing assignments and tell them to get them in.

I gladly accept assignments until the corporation locks Canvas at the end of the last day. Some teachers lock their Canvas two days before the end of the grading period!
