The relief of being average at work is something no one really talks about. When I worked in retail, we had to sell Mastercards at the cashier stations. The people who were really good at it ended up being sent to cash way more than everyone else and were expected to push it constantly. The ones who were just average at it got rotated, did other tasks, and honestly had a bit more balance. That’s when I realized sometimes being ‘okay’ at something actually protects your energy!!

This feels like an unspoken truth in many places. When you consistently do the best job, you often get stuck doing it. Promotion becomes harder, and you end up taking on other people’s work too. I struggle with wanting to overachieve while knowing that, in many places, it isn’t rewarded with more pay or advancement. Have you seen places where it works differently, or is this the norm? In my experience, it seems to be how most places operate.

Honestly… I’ve seen that a lot too. It’s hard wanting to give 100% and realizing it doesn’t always lead to more pay or growth. That realization hits.

Ive had a similar epiphany and that's why I stepped back. Stop over performing and just do what I need to do to get me and my team through the weeks. I don't need to be pulled out to do xyz for the betterment of the company because they don't care about the betterment of me!

I get this. It’s tough when you realize you’re pouring into a company that wouldn’t necessarily pour back into you. Boundaries at work are so important.

That's a lot of what work is. Doing things you hate just well enough to hang onto your job. I'm so glad I've never had to push those cards. I cringe inside whenever I'm checking out and the cashier will ask me to sign up for the store card to save 20% or whatever. It has to suck being forced to do that all day, every day.

That’s such a real take. Doing just enough to stay afloat shouldn’t be the goal, but sometimes it feels like survival mode.

This is such a real take. Being great often just earns you more pressure and less variety, not more rewards. Sometimes being average keeps you flexible, balanced, and a little more sane. It is wild how being “okay” can actually protect your energy. Have you noticed how the top performers are usually the most burnt out?

like

Yes!! It’s wild how being reliable just turns into more pressure instead of more reward. No wonder burnout hits the hardest workers first.

That’s very true, because if you’re really good, they are going to milk you.

Honestly that’s the part nobody talks about. The better you are, the more gets piled on.

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.
