There are some whose personalities don’t lend themselves to being a good employee. They’d prefer to be an entrepreneur and work for themselves. I saw a video that was normalizing working corporate because it’s able to fund a comfortable life. I’m in this camp, I love being an employee. Where on the spectrum are you?

I'm not motivated or interested in working enough in order to be an entrepreneur. I love that for the people who have that kind of drive, but it's not me, and it never will be, probably. I enjoy my steady paycheck, my health benefits, my lunchtime, and not having to pay crazy taxes.

It’s completely okay to be this way, life is too short. I too would rather have more work-LIFE balance. Work totally hard the hours I’m working but outside those take care of ME and my family

The same as you. I don't have the creativity or attention span to run the show myself. I'm completely fine with letting someone else tell me what to do as long as I'm paid well for doing it.

I was always curious about starting a side hustle but exactly like you my attention span stunted them from getting very far

My dad who lives in Asia just announced that he had a medical issue. I’m starting to enter the age where I’m going to take care of him financially. Just wanted to share with this group as many of you can understand what it feels like to support your parents when they’re old, not the other way around. I feel so blessed I can help him. 🙏🏽

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

I'm a SWE from Italy. Love my country but salary and taxes here are outrageous. Got 2yrs experience in fullstack and data science, 2masters, a peer reviewed paper and outperform all my peers for 24k€ a year.
I'm thinkin about landing a remote SWE job (leetcoding and building a portfolio this summer).
Have you got some advice? Is it possible to work for US remotely without visa? What other countries pay well? Is it possible to land a 100k$+ with this kind of experience and working from Italy?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. I have now been asked to design an architecture for an upcoming project, and document it all. Nothing at this company has been well documented before. I have a feeling they just planning to use my previous experience and then let me go since my pay is high. Is there a way I can safeguard against this?
