I know that dealing with little kids all day can be frustrating. I teach a class with 3-5 year olds with and without disabilities. I understand how challenging it can be!
Try to remember that these little ones have only been alive for a few years. Their brains and bodies are still developing. Their parents may or may not have the skills and emotional maturity to guide them through their learning process. If your little still needs to suck his thumb to self- soothe, and he cried when you told him not to do it, he needs to be taught new strategies to self-soothe. If he bites, he may lack the verbal skills to express himself. The kids who show the most difficult behaviors often need the most loving guidance. Remember- behavior is a form of communication. When he acts out, what is he trying to tell you? What unmet need does he have? Go out of your way to connect with him and reinforce his positive behaviors. He’s a little kid. Don’t see him as a problem child. See him as a child who needs love, attention, and guidance toward better choices and habits. You can be the person who
makes a difference in how he sees himself and how he learns to behave!
