There’s a senior manager at my firm who I just don’t vibe with—our personalities clash, and honestly, I find him a little condescending. But he has a lot of influence, and I know that having him in my corner could open doors. Part of me feels like I should just suck it up and build that connection, but another part feels fake even considering it. Is it worth networking with someone you don’t really like for the sake of career growth? Have you done it before, and if so, how did you make it feel authentic without forcing it?

I'm trying to get over this too. Really focusing on separating the work relationship from personal feelings and it's hard.

I try to be personable with coworkers, regardless of how I might regard them outside of work. I mean, I may not want to be friends with someone in my ordinary life, but being friendly at work I don't see as an obstacle or a challenge. If someone is condescending or obnoxious in some way, I just try not to let it bother me. It's someone I happen to work with, they're not going to be a close friend anyway.

I’ve been in similar situations, and I think it’s worth trying to build that connection, even if it feels a bit awkward. Focus on finding common ground or shared goals, maybe that can make interactions feel more authentic. It’s all about navigating the professional landscape, and sometimes that means working with people we don’t necessarily vibe with

I’ve been in similar situations. I once had a senior leader I didn’t click with at all. He was dismissive and I dreaded our interactions so much. But I knew having a good relationship with him could open a lot of opportunities, so I focused on mutual goals rather than trying to like him. It still felt transactional at times to be honest, but keeping it professional and finding common ground helped. In the end, it paid off without me feeling too fake.
