I found that a lot of my production skills translated pretty easily into project management. I ended up doing some certifications and got a job doing what I'm doing now. I miss the entertainment industry, but I don't miss the pay and the instability.
Yeah that’s a good point, I’ve been hoping to shift that direction anyway so that’s a good sign!
Skills are always transferable! A lot of companies actually prefer you to start with limited experience in their particular field too so they can train you and teach you better on the job.
That's great, don't worry, because most skills are more transferable than people think: it’s just about matching the language to the target industry. If you can prove your value in numbers and outcomes, another field will take notice.
True, I imagine most industries use the majority of the same skill sets just in different ways. A large part will be applying myself.
It seems that it may be difficult to move away from the industry but I think if you include the skills you have gained on your CV and include a covering letter to describe your intentions!
Have you considered a parallel career? So many people work in this industry but also have their own businesses or day jobs so they can pay their bills. If you love something, you don't give up on it for money since that's part of your soul and who you are. All you do is prioritize differently and find ways to still have what you do relate to what you do in entertainment so nobody ever gets to say "you left."
This is pretty much the norm in the indie space since you never make a killing there but that doesn't mean you're a hobbyist or don't behave in a professional manner. Even big time, well known people in entertainment have side jobs like teaching, cooking, dog walking, a Trader Joe's job, something.
