If the parent has anything to do with providing a weapon to the child and they deserve anything they get!

While I won't go as far as that. This wasn't just providing a weapon. The parents had been contacted about the kid having multiple issues. The dad not only bought a gun he bought a higher than normal capacity magazine and ignored the kid building a shrine to school shooters in his room. Criminal negligence seems more than appropriate in this case. Literally half of my state (ND) has directly the parents fault. But this case goes way beyond that. Lock his posterior up.

I have a hard time holding one person responsible for another person’s choices in criminal matters. I think there is plenty of good reason to do this in tort law, and I would rather that be the case here.

I think we incarcerate far too many people in this country, and I am positive that we don’t all share the same views as to why we use incarceration in the first place. My opinion is that we should only imprison people who we find would be a danger to society if they were allowed to be free. I don’t see any danger this father poses to his community. So why jail him? The only reasoning I see would be as a cautionary tale for other parents, but I am not a fan of using the law to send a message to others.

I don’t want prison to be a punishment. Use fines or loss of rights as punishments instead. There’s too many reasons why imprisoning people doesn’t serve any purpose well except possibly enriching private prison systems. Prisons work really well for protecting us from people who are dangerous. They don’t work well for other purposes, and they are really expensive, and are often run poorly. So let’s do better than just sticking a guy like this in a box for awhile.

So my way too long answer to this is that I think the father deserves plenty of consequences, but I see no reason to criminally charge him. Let the families sue him for damages and let him work the rest of his life in shame to pay them recompense instead of the same families paying taxes to feed and house him instead.

I’m not opposed to that, in principle. Could you imagine how hard they would hit them! We would find out if death by paddling is possible.
