This may be a silly question but I am heading to my first partner retreat, and I am worried about what I should wear. The retreat will be a 5 day boondoggle in Texas in late May. The firm is encouraging cowboy hats and boots, which seems possibly tone deaf. Any thoughts? I am short, on the plump side, and terribly self conscious. Thanks in advance.

5 days 😳

I honesty would see a private shopper at Nordstrom or MM LaFleur or somewhere and plan to drop some serious $ on outfits for the whole time that you love. You want to feel confident. Bring a few options for evenings because I feel like the dress is all over the map. I would lean toward nicely tailored wide leg cropped pants with nice airy blouses, so you look polished but ready for the heat.

The whole cowboy cosplay thing should take a back seat. Like maybe bring a hat or boots if you want, but focus on feeling like the best version of you and don’t get bogged down trying to loop alligator boots into the look.

I have the same body type as you and I love the Bettina dress (maxi length) from Anthropologie in a fun pattern for warm weather work retreats. Comes in petite sizes too! The Petite Small fits me surprisingly well (5’1”, 150 lbs).

Location matters. For example, Fort Worth or a retreat on a remote ranch, hat and boots make sense. Austin less so. Having said that, I’ve heard that some of the Texas based firms (eg V&E) do things like host a custom cowboy hat fitting station at their partner retreats. I think it’s just meant to be fun. Regardless of the wardrobe hope you have a great time!

My biggest takeaway from my first partner retreat: I was not prepared to see my fellow partners in bathing suits by the pool and in robes at the spa- especially men in the latter. So many tattoos I didn’t know about! 😂😂. So be prepared!!

funny

lol is this H&K

I’ll also add: I grew up in Texas and owned a cowboy hat once bc I had to as part of a work uniform and owned a couple of pairs of boots over the years, but wore them rarely. On occasion with a cute minidress in my early 20s or if going to the rodeo or something. I would def not spend any $$ on a hat or boots and they take up too much room in a suitcase.

I had a first interview last Tuesday with Amazon, which I think went well, although I still haven't heard back 6 days later and then got an OOO annual leave msg and a no response when I chased up the named colleague today. Is this typical behaviour others have experienced when dealing with the big tech company recruiters? I found Google and Facebook recruiters to be efficient and TikTok so-so, if not a little slow, but 6 days+ seems poor.
