I agree, I think it’s one thing (questionable but understandable to a certain extent) to hold him up as a great basketball player and LA icon. Even then I think it is a bit cringey as there are many LA sports heroes that do not have this on their record that could be celebrated.
At best he’s a dad who cheated on his wife casually with a random woman in a hotel in Co. At worst he is an adulterer who raped a young woman. Neither are statue-worthy IMO.
Does MLK have any statues of him as a great dad and husband? Big part of my take is that I acknowledge that he is a legend basketball player. Putting up a statue of him in that regard is at least defensible. Hard work, dedication, greatness…I at least get that even if I don’t agree with it.
Dedicating a statue to him as a family man is deplorable.
Also, MLK changed the face of our nation and the world through his actions and a civil rights movement. Kobe put a ball through a hoop.
If you are talented and famous enough people will disregard your horrible behavior
This is Los Angeles where we idolize athletes , movie stars and reality tv stars. It was never about if they were saints in life or all the do gooders. No surprise. There are still fans here that come to LA to worship
