Review your historical hours per month, estimate what the new/added initiatives will take timewise. Then pad that 20-25% because real life. Then include in contract that retainer is flat fee, used or not (the point and meaning of a retainer). Then add clearly spelling out in detail what retainer covers one by one. AND, then add language that anything outside of the above items is not covered and therefore would require additional one off cost or revised monthly retainer. Payment due upfront every quarter. Stay away from monthly BS if you can or if you must do monthly, upfront at 1st of month like rent. Never after. Because you're not counting hours anymore!
Do not ask client what they prefer. You state your terms as finite and only negotiate if you get meaningful pushback. You control your terms for your service not the other way around
I definitely do. I send them a timesheet and invoice every month, so everything’s been very above-board the entire time
Hey SC1, how many hours per month are you billing with the client? Is going on retainer just more convenient than counting hours? Do you stand to make more? If you do stand to make more, why would the client want to do it? I have no knowledge in this arena, just genuinely curious. Thanks for any insight.
Interesting. Thanks for the info.
Some context: I was brought on a year ago to help with a brand refresh, tone of voice, and UX/web copy. The past year has been great and the clients been very happy with me, and they’re now asking for social strategy and team recommendations, which I’m happy to provide.
I said I thought this seems to be working g well for everyone, and asked if they’d be interested in switching to a monthly retainer with my next contract extension instead of counting up my hours every month. They said sure, and asked me to draft a proposal.
So I’m drafting a proposal. Anything I should keep in mind?
