Vet tech here and not a fan. Not only is there potential for injury, but monitoring urine and feces are key indicators of a cat’s health. Plus cats typically do not like covered litter boxes.
That's a really good point I've never considered. Don't own one because I'm old fashioned and it seems like a pricey thing that will just break, but never really realized that when I am cleaning my guys litter boxes I am thinking about what I'm seeing and if anything looks off

Watch out and do some research. One these boxes had been malfunctioning and killing people’s cats.

Have had litter robot 3 for almost four years, never had any issues, love it, totally worth the price tag.
Smell: I have a sensitive nose and don’t smell anything at all when: emptying the litter drawer regularly, don’t let it ‘overflow’, wash the sphere itself periodically (once a month unless any mess happens).
Cleaning: keeping the litter drawer tidy is easy and low maintenance but washing the sphere itself is a PAIN though. One can use wipes - it works but takes time to clean thoroughly, I don’t have time for that. I take the sphere out and wash with garden hose - nice and easy, comes out super clean, but in winter months - sphere doesn’t fit in the sink, so need to use a shower, which only works if the shower head is detachable and not fixed up there.
As for monitoring cat’s health by paying attention to urine and feces - LR sends me a push every time a cat used it, so I know if they go regularly. All the ‘work product’ is deposited in the litter drawer, and easily distinguishable from one another, just like when scooping it out from a regular litter box with clumping litter.
Moreover, if you have more than 1 kitty, LR will tell you which cat did its business and when.
We have a refurbished Litter Robot and love it.
We had the litter robots and they started having lots of issues. We switched to the neakasa litter boxes and it been absolutely fantastic. So much better.
I first tried the PetSnowy and my cat hated it. He didn’t like being enclosed. Then we got the Litter Robot and he’s been very happy. It’s been really great for us. Worth every penny vs scooping litter. We even put it in a closet with a cat flap on the door and the cat loves it. We lured him in with catnip at first.
Just bought a Meowant. Comes in today. Already had a cabinet litter box, hoping it’s a smooth transition
I bought the LR4 almost a year ago and it's been a godsend. I have a sensitive nose and hate the smell of a litter box. This purchase has not only alleviated that concern but also has given me great reprieve in scooping. The LR products are not the automatic litter boxes that have been killing cats, so I'd say they're safer than a lot of the other options out there. They have really good censors.
