That's super depressing. But I suppose you just have to be honest with the candidate. Times are tough, hopefully they will understand.
Let them know due to budget constraints the position was eliminated. If you want to keep the candidate for possible future hiring let them know that if anything changes are they open to be contacted for a position. They may say no because they went through the process and need a job! It’s always better to be as honest as you can and make sure to connect with them on LinkedIn if not already. Never burn a bridge is my motto.
It happens and the sooner you share the better for both of you.
Be as honest and transparent as possible. The funding approval is no longer available.
They will be stunned so think of the questions they will ask well when do you think it will be available again ….
Be prepared to answer honestly and don’t leave false hope
Tell them exactly what you told us, just in more professional terms.
You can express your own frustration that the hire didn’t happen, reiterate that you think they’re a great candidate, and express your desire to keep their information on file for a later time.
The more “human” your email sounds, the better!
I’d be honest and empathetic. Thank them for their time and enthusiasm, explain the budget change clearly, and emphasize it’s a leadership decision, not a reflection on them. Offer to stay connected for future opportunities. Keeping the door open shows respect and professionalism, even in disappointing moments.

This has happened to me directly before, and I was told that the role had been removed. It sucked but I was glad I was given a reason why!
Tell the truth…..the position was pulled and as of now is eliminated.
Transparency is the best medicine. It's better to be honest than ghost them.
