Stayed there many years back. Agree it’s a great hotel.
To be fair to the concierge, asking for Chinese food in China is a bit broad. If someone asked me for good American food nearby I’d be stumped... do they mean hamburgers? A fancy “new american” place? Does pizza count as American? You’ll probably get better luck asking for a specific food group (dumplings) or cuisine (Sichuan)

Good point - I basically just didn’t want to be recommended a pasta place. If I was Chinese and went to the WA in NYC and the guy recommended that I go to Chinatown I would be unimpressed!

Nevertheless - a great trip!

Banging.

Stayed twice around new year, (3 nights and 2 nights - they were full on NYE itself) both with reward nights. Upgraded twice, first time to a King Suite, second time to a River View on the Bund with a view of the skyscrapers of Pudong.

Room style is very classic, modern European (could come across as out of place but the building has a colonial past so I thought it worked quite well). In contrast to the Pudong Ritz (where we stayed for NYE) it was much less shouty. This was generally reflected in the guests as well, there were clearly rich people but much less shouty than the RC (massive assumptions - but it was a huge contrast with the RC in Pudong, where the lobby could’ve passed for either a Louis Vuitton or Rimowa showroom).

Service was excellent, both in-house restaurants are in the Michelin (Plate only but still good), Long Bar is also great (free cocktail each per stay, very strong so we ended up getting trashed one night). Two or three good restaurants close around as well - plus 15-20 minute walk to Shanghai Museum.

Only downside was slightly lame concierge recommendations. They all seemed stumped that we wanted to eat Chinese food in Shanghai, and then recommended Hakkasan (posh international chain...there is one in London). Also didn’t mention the Bib Gourmand Dumpling place literally one block away. But tbh this is fine if you just use a guide book / Trip Advisor.

If I see one more article on how millennials are ruining the economy or housing market by not buying enough homes or selling enough homes I'm going to scream. We were saving for 3 years before Covid and had to use a solid chunk to take care of ourselves and our families during quarantine. Now that we're ready to save again inflation and COL are at an all-time high and we're headed into a recession. And somehow this is my fault for what...not being a boomer? Bffr.

When do you know you've toured enough houses and should pick one from the list you've got? I've seen probably 15-20 homes, and put in one offer. How many homes should you tour minimum, and how many offers did you put in before you closed? I don't want to be too hasty and choose something just because, but I also think continuing to see homes isn't really making my decision any easier. Thanks!
