“We are like a family here”
nailed it. exactly what I was going to post.
Whether they hesitate before responding to the question regarding why the previous person doing the job left
How they view the lawyers! Often seen as an overhead. You will be expected to deal with numerous areas of law (depending on the firm).
Billable hours. I’ve heard some companies require in house attorneys to bill/track their time…
Definitely the culture and respect for attorneys. Does business only come to lawyers after sh!t has hit the fan? Are you just a cost center and seen as a blocker? Or does business view the lawyers with respect as true partners?
As outside counsel rates go up, companies are pulling a lot of their work back in house and expecting their lawyers to handle it, but without the resources and support you get working at a firm. Definitely try to get a sense of what work is being kept in-house, when things are referred out, what guidelines you would be given for when you can delegate something to outside counsel, etc. I’m talking with more and more in-house lawyers who find themselves being asked to do just as much if not more work than they did in private practice, but with virtually zero support.
A1 and a2 raise great ones. My boss was willing to put me in touch with the people who left whose position I was filling. That was a great sign
Lawyers are not respected. Ask if an admin support team exists for the legal team, structures. If they can’t give straight answers .. red flag!
I was in house then moved to private practice. Best decision.
I wouldn’t go back in house! Salaries are rubbish too. If I am expected to be an expert in everything then pay me more … i think you need to try it and see if it works for you. At least you can make an informed decision.
Either in the job description or throughout the interview process.
