I’m a fifth year associate who is ready to get out of litigation (and private practice altogether). I’ve only ever done professional malpractice (legal, med mal, etc) and feel like those skills will not transfer as well if I had done transactional work. Ideally I would like to transition to something in-house. Any suggestions as to what jobs/industries I could transfer into with only litigation experience?

I made that jump but it wasn’t easy and a lot of luck. I bridged by joining a healthcare company (clinical lab). Honestly very little translated but I had positioned myself as a health care attorney. I’ve posted before that it really came down to luck and culture for me.

I don’t feel that 5 years is too late to make a complete practice area jump. Think about transactional areas you may like to learn about. You are only 5 years in - you don’t want to be 20 years in and wishing you would have learned something new at 5…

Well I recently told a guy I have been seeing I have HSV-2. We have not yet been physical but it’s been heading that direction. Man I hate this part - waiting to see what his response will be after he researches and talks to his doctor. I’m on daily meds which help reduce transmission risk. You’d think that since HSV-2 affects 20% of Americans and likely a higher % of gay men, there would be less taboo but it’s hardly ever talked about. Anyone else in my shoes?
