I want to get into surfing but have no idea where to start. Did anyone here start as an adult? What do you recommend?

Southwestern college offers a surfing class at their aquatic center in Coronado. The class is on Saturdays for 16 weeks and cost $49 (they offer the class every semester). You'll need a wetsuit, unless you're used to the cold water of the Pacific.

I actually took a class in college at USD haha. It counted towards my credits as some kind of PE 😆😆. But I do recommend it. It was good having a commitment that keeps you on track and having instructors is great.

I took surfing lessons 3 month is ago at PB. The foam boards are easy to learn to pop up ( that's what they teach you on ). But you'll eventually have to buy your own board. Either a foam (wavestorm) or a fiberglass surfboard. If you're doing the latter , you want something which is around 9 feet long coz it's easier to catch waves on them and are more buoyant. I'm still struggling on my 8'10" board . DM me if you have questions

You'll also need a wetsuit . But the safest place to start is to take about 3 surfing lessons. They provide surfboard and wetsuits and walk you thru basic things like rip currents , stingray shuffle etc

Agreed, how I started - took it slow, did some classes and now I can't get enough!

Oh man, there are all of those dudes posted up on Mission Beach just waiting for people to walk over. I'd take a lesson! I started when I was 18 and that was almost 12 years ago. Surf instructors are typically the real deal because they are very passionate.

San Diego is the place to be when it comes to surf. You've got OB, Mission, La Jolla, Encinitas. Each city has it's own surf culture. I found that taking lessons in Mission Beach was pretty low-key and not very territorial which is always good.

I probably did the same thing as D1. I used San Diego Surf School at Tourmaline, which is a really great place to learn, as far as I can tell. I agree. Book 3 lessons with them, then figure out if you’re into it, and buy your own gear if you are. I’m told that you can get away with foam boards for a while until you get good enough to buy something better (and shorter)

Incidentally, although I had a really good experience, I never really caught the bug, so checked it off the list and got to focus on other hobbies.

I started two years ago in my late twenties! It is super doable. First step (even before you buy a board) is to take a lesson - it will be embarrassing but suck it up and drag a friend along and go on a week day. Take lessons a few lessons and THEN buy a longboard once you know you're actually interested in following through. Go to La Jolla Shores, easiest ride in the world.

I would recommend buying a foam board and trying to go a minimum of 3 times per week. Learn the paddling technique and pop up first and go from there.

What areas are the most territorial?

I will say I never got into surfing but only because I am not a great swimmer, and I have always been kind of afraid of the water. However, I did take ballet as an adult and I absolutely loved it. If its something you are interested in, I say go for it! You are never too old to learn something new.

Take some lessons! Several spots at different beaches offer them. I think that’s the best way to try it out before investing in equipment, and you’ll learn the fundamentals. I’d also suggest starting out at more “beginner” beaches as the beaches with more advanced surfers could be overwhelming— you’ll be in the way and ppl will make it known that you’re in the way, understandably. U don’t want to be the kook haha

I want to take lessons but I don't know where. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What are your client follow-up/communication policies or practices? I’m hearing more and more that clients don’t like the long periods of time with little to no contact. From my perspective, since I bill for my time, unless I have an update or need something, I don’t initiate a call. Also, clients hold on to important info and don’t initiate a call cause they’re waiting for me to communicate with them.

So, this is a little awkward, but I recently moved to SD for a fresh start, and honestly, I love this city. My problem is I have been more of a homebody since I moved here and I'm a little intimidated to go out and meet people because I don't feel like I fit in here. I am overweight and this city is full of active, and attractive people. I guess I am wondering what my experience would be if I got out more?
