I like to get away from common and literal questions. I always like to ask what they do outside of work, references they like, not advertising, but in general. I also think asking about their brainstorm process and where they usually go to get inspired. Art Directors can have different backgrounds like design, motion, directing, etc, so make sure their background align with your expectation and the projects you currently have on your plate. And be kind 🙃

“Are you worried about the layoffs my agency just had?”
"How do you like to work?"
If you like to split off and come up with your own ideas to share later and they love brainstorming every concept together, you both are going to have a tough time working together.

Got paired with one whose portfolio did not line up with their skill. Learned later it was work they had little to no involvement in.
Next time I might ask more questions around how the work in their book came together and what they put into it.

Also like to ask them where they get and store this inspo. Good ADs always have some insane folder of visuals they keep somewhere. Usually on a folder or on some ultra curated website you’ve never heard of

Ask them how they grew up, because you might learn more about why they act the way they do. Gives you the opportunity to balance your communication style.
I always want to know what someone is passionate about but asking that question directly seems a little skeevy. So I sometimes ask what kind of other art or creativity are you into. What kind of music do you like? Are you a fan of any particular film director? I’ve had some art director partners who were big car, buffs, and that worked for some of the clients we were working on. I’ve had some who were golfers, and I never really hit it off with them. And I’ve had some who were just really into photography. Those worked out well.
