I wish our agency did this. Instead they just promise the world and pass it onto us minions. For peanuts while they take their gleeful margins.
I always respect when an agency pulls out of an RFP. It’s a clear indication they have their priorities in order.
The pitch process gives you insight into what it will be like working with the clients. If their demands are unreasonable (eg spec creative, multiple directions, free strategy work, tight time lines, little-to-no compensation, too many agencies pitching) you should always tell them to f&@$ off.
It used to. Lots of pitches don’t have spec creative anymore.
It’s clearly a procurement “pitch” that’s just an excuse to squeeze the incumbent for better rates.
Over the span of my career, I’ve lost track of how many pitches I wish we had dropped out of.
Lots of reasons. We won a pitch for a brand once - they never signed because they filed for Chapter 11 about a month later.

Why do people decline job offers? Same in a lot of ways — including (and this happened to moi) the client-preferred agency that had originally declined to compete called up and, because someone else had just ditched them, said, “hey, hey.”

Sometimes they agree to participate and withdraw after seeing the true scope. Sometimes it’s less than expected; sometimes it’s way more and out of reach.
Clients refusing to engage with the agency outside of the RFP document or some bullshit blinded Q&A process in Ariba. Instant withdrawl.
