I’m sorry to hear that, but not surprised. Advocating for our job is not fair and something I wish to change. That being said the best way to advocate is to show the district/principal, parents and students that your school cannot function without you. Start by picking quality literature. Schedule small performances in the community and of course do football games. Try to balance your instrumentation as best as you can and then practice your butts off for the performances. With a little faith your program is established after a year and then you can emphasize through music social equity and leadership.
We have done community events, football games, basketball games, etc.
I'm trying to find up with some other metrics or indicators of a quality program besides butts in seats.
Are there other things (student leadership, vertical alignment, student accountability things, parental involvement...?)
Look at programs similar to yours and reach out to those directors. Find out what did and didn’t work and then emulate what you see fits for your program.
