Ridiculous and pointless publicity stunt for the celebrities who literally “went for a ride” .
They didn’t actively do anything related to science.
Their role was to sit there and take a few selfies, the very definition of a ride (which was seemingly offensive to Gayle King despite being true).
Don’t get me started on Katie Perry and her insipid “feel all the love” comments. Promo stunt.
It's weird because they did have two actual astronauts/STEM leaders on that trip but every media outlet acted as if they weren't there. If the coverage had broken the story into 3 parts: astronaut, STEM, celebrities, I believe the response would have been very different.
I agree that the focus areas for this flight did not help anyone and it sucks because that group had everything needed to make it something awesome if they had just talked about everyone and their contributions.
Totally agree that the actual STEM ladies were overshadowed by celebrities. To me, the bigger shame is, Blue Origin is remotely piloted from what I understand. They went up and back, and it's not their abilities that got them there. I would have loved if it was two crew and 4 passengers, where at least the incredibly accomplished STEM ladies could have taken credit for navigating the ship. I don't think that was the case. 100000% happy to be corrected if I'm wrong and there was more to it though!
Agree with Senior Vice President 100%. Plus, it's funny to me how people only care about STEM when they get to gatekeep it. When it’s women making history, suddenly everyone’s a spaceflight expert or a conspiracy theorist.
When they said they redesigned the space suits that’s all I needed to hear. They did it for the gram!
