Most recruiters who have been around the block will know your comp range anyway. If you’re out of band due to a special circumstance (e.g., priority skillset, international transfer, etc) you’re better off disclosing and being honest. A loose lipped recruiter was how I learnt my pay pack at current firm is double what they previously knew to be the highest pay pack at my grade.

I guess the point that D1 is making is that putting all your cards on the table with the expectation that doing so will favour you is naive. The recruiter will not upsell you if you don’t upsell yourself first

If you’re BCG they’ll know your comp basically anyway as we are bracketed
Just say a number - I think £1M is a good starting point.
I tell them my current salary and what im looking for / what ive been offered in this market. Headhunters have always been extremely supportive towards getting me top of the range salaries
From next year in the EU, recruiters won’t be able to ask this question. Not sure about if the UK will also adopt
