Insurance is there for when you need it. It's better if you don't need to use it, but in case you do, you'll be glad to have access to this!
Truer words were never spoken.
I had private from Aviva for 4 years and I've never used NHS since and went to the best private hospitals in London like London Bridge Hospital.
They tell you that the GP note is required, but never ask to provide it and private doctors couldn't give a damn - if you know you need a specialist just call them and tell you you've seen a GP and they said to see a specific specialist.
Definitely keep it. I had to have surgery after a bad cut when I first moved here and hadn’t yet set up my private insurance. I had to wait days with part of my body cut open due to nhs wait times!!!
Also, as others have said, when you need referrals (notice I said “when,” not “if”), your NHS GP will happily give you any referral for a private specialist, but they have been given very strict guidelines to limit referrals to NHS specialists due to underfunding. I was actually told by my former GP “I’ve seen [x medial issue] much worse in many people - you can manage”. Until I told her I had private insurance.
Private is also absolutely key if you ever need mental health support.
Depends on your company’s plan. I have to go nhs for gp.
Yes, private medical from employers is a really big deal actually. In case you need a specialist appointment the waiting times for NHS can be really long (they asked me to wait for 6 months for an ENT appointment) - with private you don’t have to wait as much.

I read in this bowl that private insurance gets you quick appointments and thats the biggest advantage. Otherwise its a month wait

NHS is great for small things and emergencies. Anything bigger... Private rules, by clear orders of magnitude. Keep it.
Keep! NHS waitlist is the longest it's ever been.
Keep. You actually don't need to go through NHS at all. Most private medical plans have a private GP or a video GP service. I only downside is that private prescriptions cannot be paid for under NHS but it's not too bad.
