What do you usually talk about to kick off conversations at work events? I’m trying to get better at keeping things light and navigating small talk. I tend to dive deep too quickly, and I think it throws people off in more casual settings. Is there a trick to keeping it easy and natural? I’d love to hear what works for you!

Usual things like family, hobbies etc! I feel like once you start talking about stuff you’re genuinely interested in it makes it so much easier to talk about naturally

Just do the regular small talk topics, keep it about the work event, or if it is somebody outside of where you normally are, ask a little about what they do. I can be a bit of an oversharer so do try to remind yourself it's a professional work space and keep conversation limited.

Stick to easy stuff like weekend plans, favorite local spots, or even the food at the event. Keeping it light means avoiding heavy topics early on and tossing in a bit of humor. I remind myself it’s small talk, not therapy. Makes it less awkward and way more chill for everyone.

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.
