Received an offer as Engagement Director from Salesforce (CSG, pre sales, L9). Great benefits package, 40% increase in total comp and better WLB.
I do love the people in my practice and current client, but career trajectory has stalled after taking parental leave earlier this year and (yet another) change in leadership.
Realistically, making to Director is 2-3 years away and will require sacrificing time with my family that I am not prepared to give up.
Should I stay or should I go?

I came from Bain and interviewed at Mck. No one at McKinsey asked me why I wanted to switch. They didn’t care at all. Just do a good job and you’ll be fine
I’ve only seen it from MBAs who intern at one MBB but start full time at another, or at the partner level. I suspect it can be done, but you would need to have a clear and logical reason why you want to switch and why you can’t accomplish those goals at your current MBB (e.g., industry specializations, staffing model, etc.). Otherwise, it just seems like a red flag since the firms are all similar enough. I would also expect to get bumped down to the first-year equivalent of your current level
I think the firms are relatively similar so moving for a specific reason will probably affect your life minimally in whatever specific aspect you’re optimizing for
However if optimizing for general better experience I think that the firm that is in the best financial state will collectively provide a better overall experience.
Making money, growing business creates good atmosphere, people get bigger bonuses, maybe generally are more enjoyable to be around when things are going well, staffing is good, development opportunities grow, etc
I would want to see more evidence of who is best equipped to have a good next 5-10 years and align myself to that firm
My friends have done it but it’s typically at the Associate or Partner level.
look at the alumni directory! more common than you’d think
Did you have multiple offers before hand? I look at a lot of LinkedIn profiles but don’t commonly see multiple MBB’s - going from MBB to Big 4/accenture or vice versa and boomeranging seems common though
I am new associate so less than 6 months
I know a guy who lateraled as a C from Mck to a BCG X data scientist. Same level, different role.
He definitely had the coding skills - how he got those I’m not sure. It’s definitely not typical. People w those skills don’t usually pursue generalist consulting, and people in generalist consulting don’t generally pursue those skills.
Do LinkedIn research. It happens
It’s quite possible, but you wouldn’t move to a higher equivalent level
Oh yeah I don’t want to reset my EM promo clock so I’d probably wait until EM to lateral. I know it’s harder but it’s good to know that it’s possible
