Perhaps I'm spoiled with the team I have, but I feel like women are fairly well-represented in marketing. In fact, I think we are overrepresented. My entire team is women, and very strong women at that.
also jealous!
What do you mean by representation in this sentence? Representation of what?
Mentor
Representation makes a huge difference, especially when you're one of two women on a seven-person team, like I am. I've caught myself shrinking back in meetings, not because I don’t have ideas, but because my voice never carries the same weight. When most of the room doesn’t look or think like you, it can start to feel like you’re out of place, even when you’ve earned your seat. It’s not always overt exclusion, it’s subtle things, like having to over-explain an idea (fully qualified to have) or getting talked over (every day). It takes a toll. That’s why representation isn’t just symbolic. It’s what gives the next generation of women the confidence to speak up, lead boldly, and know they belong without needing to prove it over and over and over.
I hear you, and you’re absolutely right, representation changes everything, especially in rooms where you're constantly having to prove yourself. Keep speaking up, even when it’s hard, your presence and your voice are already paving the way for others to belong without apology.
Not a woman, but I'd imagine it plays a big role. It's always inspiring seeing someone like you doing something you want to. It makes it seem like a more attainable goal.
Glad to have allies!
