Ask to work on M&A projects at your current firm. If you’re in core tax or international tax at a large firm, there is often a lot of opportunity to work on M&A projects without needing to actually be in the M&A tax group. At the more junior level it’s all grunt work, but you do get to learn by listening in on calls and preparing and reading the memos.
Not to be a turd in a punch bowl, but I’ve been in M&A for over a decade and never seen a core tax non rotation person work on a deal.
Occasionally we’ve brought some international tax people in, but even that is could count on my hands total over the decade plus.
Rotation really is the way.
Try to get a rotation with M&A tax if your firm offers it.
You need hands on experience if you’re looking to transfer to M&A. I don’t think you can learn enough just from reading about it. Being on diligence calls, doing reports, etc. is a whole different ballgame.
