Partner (CPA) and principal (non-CPA) are equity roles.
MD non equity.
The other two are titles for our internal non-client-facing roles; loose equivalents of SM and M when compared to client service. Director can also be a Manager equivalent title in Strategy & Transactions service line.
This is for the US.
Outside of the US MD is Executive Director.
There’s also Associate Partner, which is similar to MD - non-equity role basically.
PPMDD - Partner Principal Managing Director Director
PPs have equity - partners are CPAs and principal are not
Rest are employees
MD client facing
D is not - CBS, CT etc
Associate director is internal SM equivalent
Real difference?
PPs make 2-3x what MDDs make and have the exact same metrics, responsibilities and accountability than MDDs
EY3 - good catch - you are 💯 correct and we have some fabulous Ds that interact with clients daily
Should have said that MDs are “client serving” ie billable

Principal1 - there is a “bonus structure” for PP in the US. And a “bad revenue year” doesn’t result in a check back to the firm except in extreme circumstances.
At least share factual information…..
OP - there are plenty of MDs who are doing fine. Would argue many we’ve paid too much of a premium for to hire from externally, considering the output.
