Shouldn’t you be able to answer that?
They should (in theory) be the same thing…
Pro
Agree. In theory. But I’ve seen some CDs have an inclination to particular types of work.
At the point you’ve been promoted to an ACD, you’ve established a relationship where they trust your work, and they think theres an understanding that at least on some level, you agree on where the work needs to go. You bring the finished package. They sign off or give feedback.
The best CDs, though, see you not just as the way to get things done, but also as the future. They’ll see where you’re trying to go with the work if it’s braver and better, and they’ll help you navigate that together.
I feel like you’re seeing work from a particular ACD that you don’t like? Or you think they’re pandering to you?
Either way ..:
An ACD should foster the best work for the client’s needs and bring that to you for consideration and feedback.

You should help them make the work sellable. But you should also be helping them develop all of their skills, especially writing/design craft and conceptual skills every day.
A good CD will want the work to satisfy the brief in an unexpected way.
As a junior that’s worked with good and bad ACDs and CDs, the best experience was my ACD who was enthusiastic about feedback and the work. Encouraging the best I could possibly do. The worst, trying to keep the work in a box that the client will like, always ‘putting on their client hat’. It was exhausting and not fun. Sometimes the CD thought the work was boring and I got a lot of heat for it.
VP CD here. I find that ACDs especially new ones can hone in a Jrs work within their discipline (art/copy) but still need experience honing in the big picture (creative strategy) or the disciple they’re not familiar with (art or copy). That’s why most places still have an ACD team looking over stuff.
